Asim Jamal Shakir Jr.

DIRECTOR • DP + WRITER • PRODUCER

Asim Jamal Shakir Jr. is a visionary writer-director and cinematographer fusing raw authenticity, cinematic craft, and cultural storytelling — from music videos and short films to commercial campaigns and original series, he builds worlds that move audiences and shape conversation.

Jamal Shakir, is a Los Angeles-born filmmaker and classic car visionary whose work bridges artistry, culture, and commerce. While most college students were still choosing majors, Jamal had already co-founded Visual Authority Media, directed music videos for hip-hop icon T.I., and became the first in history to graduate from LaGrange College with a DCMF degree. His visuals for Black Man featuring Quavo and Meek Mill, and the politically charged Warzone, which has surpassed 4.8 million views on YouTube, did not just introduce him; they stamped him as a director and cinematographer with the rare ability to command scale, urgency, and story.

Since then, Jamal’s trajectory has been relentless. In 2025, he made his commercial directing debut with a Super Bowl Doritos spec. He cut his teeth as a camera operator on a project for the Federal Government State Department as well as the award-winning short Clean Future before leveling up through collaborations with Emmy Award winners Markuann Smith of Godfather of Harlem and Milan Cheylov of 24 and Prison Break. He has worked shoulder-to-shoulder with world-renowned cinematographers including Jeff Cronenweth of The Social Network and Michael Gioulakis of Us and It Follows through professional shadowing and mentoring on and off set. On the commercial front, Jamal has contributed to campaigns for Chime, Citi Bank, Adobe, Volkswagen, and McDonald’s, and in 2022, he further honed his craft in prestige television as part of the camera team for FX’s Snowfall Season 6.

But Jamal is not just behind the camera, he is building worlds. His short films Tunnel Vision and Lynched By Treason have earned festival recognition, while his upcoming television series Land of No Pity positions him as a Creator, Writer, Director, and DP with something urgent to say. Expanding the universe, Jamal is producing a companion podcast and documentary that expose the real-world prosecutorial misconduct that inspired the project.

An entrepreneur at heart, Jamal owns and operates his own cinema cameras including a RED system he invested in and upgraded over time, and rents gear to empower other filmmakers. Beyond film, he is a classic car visionary who bridges restoration, culture, and commerce. From reviving rust-bucket relics into award-winning showpieces to supplying the wire wheels that define lowrider style, he has built a reputation as both creator and connector. Jamal provides luxury storage solutions for rare classics and brokers trusted access to top body and paint shops, making him a go-to resource for enthusiasts who want their cars preserved, elevated, and celebrated; all while documenting it all!

Raised between Los Angeles and Warner Robins, Georgia, Jamal’s path was never smooth. With both parents incarcerated before his first birthday, he learned resilience early and turned it into fuel. At LaGrange College, he earned dual B.A.s in Digital Creative Media & Film Production and Kinesiology/Coaching, while excelling as a collegiate football player and being named Defensive Player of the Game at the Team USA All-American Football showcase in Mexico City. Now at 28, Jamal stands at the intersection of artistry, impact, and culture. His ultimate goal is to release Land of No Pity and build a nonprofit that connects teens to the film industry, placing them directly on Hollywood sets and empowering them to tell stories rooted in the voices and realities of the prison system. Jamal is not simply a writer, director, cinematographer,  or car restorer — he is a storyteller and visionary who builds movements, fusing craft, conviction, and culture, with an unshakable belief in the power of creativity to change the conversation.
